JOURNAL6Can you tell us about how you came to make use of AOTS’s GHC Global Business Internship Program? Mr. Nakatsuka: At Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma we designated 2016 as the beginning of our education investment, and began working towards the rebuilding of our HRD system. With our backbone being growth through on-the-job experience and self-development, we established a new training system, which is based on our fundamental policy of expanding support for those who show eagerness and ability. We decided to make use of AOTS’s GHC Global Business Internship Program in order to have our promising younger employees be placed, in as early a stage as possible, in the environments of thoroughly different industries and cultures, and by having them overcome challenges by themselves, get them to boldly build up their courage. The objective of implementing this training is not to develop present global human resources, but to train our future leaders. How well they’ve overcome these challenges will come into play 10 or 15 years from now when they are at the helm of the company. As a result of them receiving this training, we’re expecting them to attain abilities in four particular areas: the forging of their own new values, the adapting to and understanding of different cultures, tolerance towards uncertainty, and the indomitable spirit to overcome hardships.Through participating in AOTS’s GHC Global Business Internship Program, could you tell us what kind of experiences you had in the country you were dispatched to, in particular focusing on areas that were difcult?Mr. Horie: For six months from October 2017, he was dispatched to a company that manufactures and sells hotel amenities in Thailand. This was the rst time I went to Thailand, and the infrastructure and hygiene conditions of the environment I stayed in were not quite to the same standard as Japan. I was dispatched to a company that was a small-to-medium-sized enterprise that manufactures and sells hotel amenities and spa goods. Compared with my own company in Japan, it was of a considerably smaller size, and I felt there was much larger scope and judgment entrusted to each individual worker. For my internship work I was assigned to the New Business Development Division, and along with my Thai instructor, the two of us worked on the selling of health food products. Out of seven candidate food products we selected the ones most likely to have a higher return, then started our sales work by telephoning potential client companies. However, due to being new products there was no accumulated know-how in the company, so we had to start our research from scratch. It was the rst time the company was trying to handle food products, so they were relatively unknown in the industry, which meant Mr. Toru Nakatsuka, Director, Senior Human Resource Development OfficerMr. Kazuki Horie Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co., Ltd.Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma Co., Ltd. strives to constantly pursue self-innovation in order to deliver innovative products and services with speed so that people around the world can lead healthier and more fullling lives.
