JOURNAL12During the 2010s, development began of the Rovuma Basin mining area, an enormous natural gas eld that was discovered in Northern Mozambique. With regards to the methods of using this gas, the Mozambique government had already been considering 1) LNG, 2) Gas-to-Liquid (GTL), 3) fertilizer, and 4) power generation projects. Meanwhile, Marubeni Corporation in 2010 entered into a business cooperation memorandum with Mozambique’s National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH) to advance a methanol business that would contribute to the industrialization of the area.Marubeni (Corp.) and ENH are currently collaborating to research and examine this methanol business. In order to deepen the understanding on the local nature of products and projects, Marubeni (Corp.) applied to a METI’s trade and investment promotion project (entrusted to the AOTS, and carried out in 2013) to conduct an awareness campaign by inviting local related people and dispatching interns. However, due to a renewed request from ENH for cooperation to implement training programs, it was decided that the AOTS will collaborate with Marubeni (Corp.) and ENH to progress with such training. With the objective of inviting program participants from ENH within FY2018, the AOTS entered into a memorandum between Marubeni and ENH in relation to implementing programs. At the Japan-Africa Public-Private Economic Forum held in Johannesburg, an ofcial handover ceremony was held for Japanese companies/organizations and their counterparts. Among those participants, the AOTS was present for handing over the memorandum between representatives from Marubeni (Corp.) and ENH, with both Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry, and Mr. Robert Haydn Davies, Minister of Trade and Industry in South Africa, in attendance. This is a non-subsidized project of the AOTS whose training contributes to the human resources and infrastructure development of Japanese corporations. From here on as well, the AOTS hopes to continue similarly working in rising nations such as in Africa where business promotion by Japanese companies is anticipated. At the MOU official handover ceremony.
