5No. 6 SPRING 2015Success Story ContestThe Success Story Contest was held as a forum for former trainees who have contributed to developing workplaces and local communities following their return to their countries by harnessing their experiences from the training held by HIDA in Japan to give presentations on best practices. The contest was held with the backing of METI, with a number of companies lending their cooperation as well. Roughly 400 people attended the contest, including former trainees as well as people from the world of Japanese industry, university officials, and more. The hope was that this contest would not only convey the results of HIDA’s programs more concretely, but would also serve as an opportunity to create a positive chain reaction of other successes in the future by means of sharing best practices. Here we will describe the contest to give more people an understanding of what the Success Story Contest was about. On the day of the contest, ten people who had been selected from among more than 280 applicants from 48 countries energetically presented the results of their respective activities. The contest featured a four-person grand prize selection committee members that awarded grand prizes to three people: Mr. Paulo Cesar S. Camargo (Brazil), Mr. Sarath Buddhadasa (Sri Lanka) and Mr. Tarun Lamba (India). It was hard to pick which of the presentations was the best, and so during the difficult process of selecting grand prizes Mrs. Akie Abe, the First Lady of Japan and one of the members of the selection committee, set up a special prize that was awarded to Ms. Tatiana Boyadjieva (Bulgaria).
