HIDA JOURNAL12 The Alumni Societies and HIDA’s NetworkThus far we have provided an overview of what the World Convention of HIDA/AOTS Alumni Societies was like in a special report. Here we will present an overview of the alumni societies, the various activities carried out by the alumni societies, and the HIDA programs and networks based around the alumni societies. Energetic alumni society activities The alumni societies undertake a variety of different activities that aim for economic and industrial development, contributing to local communities, and promoting friendly relations between Japan and other countries. Some of their characteristic elements in this will be introduced here. (1) WNF Program – Independent south-south cooperation by alumni societies The World Network of Friendship (WNF) is a south-south cooperation activity carried out by alumni societies working together with one another. It was proposed at the 5th World Convention of HIDA/AOTS Alumni Societies held in 1997. The alumni societies serve as the main actors in it, and each year it carries out about 10 – 15 programs to develop human resources who will take up the mantle of industrial and economic development based upon the knowledge and experiences their members acquired in Japan. The WNF Program is carried out based upon the WNF Fund that was established by contributions from alumni societies and related parties, as well as others who agree with their aims. The WNF Fund is managed by HIDA on consignment from the alumni societies. Alumni societies spreading around the world Alumni societies are organizations formed voluntarily all over the world by returned trainees who underwent HIDA (formerly AOTS; hereafter referred to as HIDA) training programs in Japan, based upon their shared experiences. At present, they have spread to 71 locations in 43 countries. What is more, the alumni societies have formed alumni society regional federations in each of six regions. Commemorative photos were taken of each of the regional federations encircling Mrs. Akie Abe, who attended the convention as a member of the selection committee for the Success Story Contest.
