No.4 SPRING 2014 25Prime Minister Abe attended the HIDA-AOTS Seminar on Quality Management in IndiaThe HIDA-AOTS Alumni Society of Delhi in India hosted “the HIDA-AOTS Seminar on Quality Management” at a hotel in the city of New Delhi on January 26, 2014, in which Dr. Hitoshi Kume, Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo, and Mr. R. C. Bhargava, Chairperson of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (former Maruti Udyog Ltd.), acted as lecturers. This seminar was targeted at pro-Japanese executive managers in Indian industry who had been trained in Japan and were putting the experience into practice back in India, with the aim of contributing to further enhancement of the competitiveness of Indian industry. It was attended by more than 130 people, including those from Japanese and Indian governmental and industrial organizations and companies, who listened enthusiastically to the lectures, which was followed by an active question and answer session. The seminar started with opening addresses by guests, H.E. Mr. EMS. Natchiyappan, the Indian Minister of State and Mr. Yuzo Goto, Director, Technical Cooperation Division, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Then, in Dr. Kume’s keynote lecture, entitled “Challenges in Indian Quality Management,” he described the quality management-related challenges facing India through looking at specifi c examples and talked about the principles governing quality management in manufacturing processes. The other lecture, by Mr. Bhargava, was entitled “Partnership between Japan and India” and was about how Japan and India should cooperate with each other in industry. In addition, it is worthy of special mention that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was visiting India, attended this seminar and delivered a speech. When the prime minister showed up in the middle of the seminar, he was greeted with a thunder of applause and was presented with a fl ower garland. The seminar was stopped temporarily to listen to his speech. In the speech, Prime Minister Abe told that “the Japanese style of assistance to developing countries was characterized by facilitating industrial growth in target countries through transferring Japanese technologies and knowhow to the countries and helping them lay the foundations for industry in their own countries,” that “Indian people who had been trained in Japan were supporting the industrial base of India by putting their Japanese-style techniques and knowledge into practice in their home country” and that “he was hoping that HIDA-ATOS Alumni Societies will continue to work to deepen the friendly partnership between Japan and India and contribute to the further growth of both of the two countries.” The words of Prime Minister Abe must have sounded very encouraging and supportive to the Alumni members present, who have been striving, in many diff erent creative ways, to disseminate what they have learned in Japan to Indian society. In India, which has a rich domestic market and quality labor force and is experiencing marked economic growth, human resources with advanced technological expertise are an essential part of the country’s major industries. With this in mind, HIDA is continuing to strengthen its economic and technological support to the country through human resource development by making the most of the network of HIDA-AOTS Alumni Societies.Guests and Alumni members (Photo courtesy of the offi cial website of Prime Minister of Japan and His Cabinet)VenueFrom right: Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Mr. M.
