In line with the schedule of this conference, HIDA implemented the Program on Corporate Management for Africa (AFCM) from May 27 to June 5 for business owners, executives and senior managers who work in African private companies and organizations, with the aim of improving business management skills. A total of 18 people participated in the program from the following African countries: Egypt, Sudan (Northern Africa), Ethiopia, Kenya (Eastern Africa), Ghana and Nigeria (Western Africa). In the training course, participants learned about various different aspects of business management, including management philosophy, marketing strategy, production management and human resource management, so that they can develop feasible management plans to solve problems and to achieve management goals in their own companies and organizations. During the training period, trainees also visited African Fair 2013, which was held as a special program under the auspices of JETRO in line with the schedule of TICAD-V. Trainees also participated in a symposium entitled “African Potentials,” which was held as a TICAD-V side event under the co-sponsorship of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Japan Productivity Center (JPC). At the symposium, after the opening address of HIDA President Kazuo Kaneko, METI’s Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau Director-General Shinsuke Kitagawa, and UNIDO’s Director-General Kandeh Yunkella, delivered speeches. After these speeches, Dr. Jean Kenne, DAPAD’s President (and former Chair of the AOTS Cameroon Alumni Society), made a presentation entitled “Africa’s Expectations for Japan and Cooperation in the Future.” AFCM course participants also presented case studies about results achieved after their return to their home countries and expectations for the future. At present, HIDA is preparing plans for projects aimed at strengthening relationships with Mozambique and South Africa. As these examples show, African countries faced with the need for natural resource development and industrialization have high expectations for support from Japan for human resource development. To meet their expectations, HIDA aims to further enhance management training courses for Africa and to take an active part in providing support to African countries.May 27 Mon.In the morningDateIn the afternoonOrientation/Opening CeremonyLecture: Management Philosophy and Strategy (1)Lecture: Japan’s policies toward Africa (at METI)May 28 Tue.Lecture: Management Philosophy and Strategy (2)Visit: Case study on Management Philosophy and StrategyMay 29 Wed.Lecture: Marketing StrategyMay 30 Thu.Visit: African Fair 2013May 31 Fri.Lecture: Human Resource ManagementJune 1 Sat.Rest dayJune 2 Sun.(Departure from Tokyo Kenshu Center)TICAD-V side event: Symposium “African Potentials”Schedule for the Program on Corporate Management for Africa (Training Venue: HIDA Tokyo Kenshu Center)June 3 Mon.Lecture: Production ManagementJune 4 Tue.Visit: Case study on Production & Human Resource ManagementJune 5 Wed.Final Report PresentationVisit: Production & Human Resource ManagementClosing CeremonyEntrance to the venue of the symposium held as a TICAD-V side event at the Yokohama Bay Hotel TokyuClosing ceremony for the AFCM course held at HIDA’s Tokyo Kenshu Center auditorium
