5HIDA Journal No. 2 ● SPRING 2013Experts Dispatch ProgramAnother challenge faced by companies who expanded their business overseas is how they can optimize their production and management systems (i.e. localization of their business). With increasingly intense competition in place on a global scale, locally-incorporated subsidiaries overseas are also strictly required to improve productivity and quality, while Japanese ways of doing business cannot always be applied as they do not necessarily lead to the expected results due to differences in climate, culture, customs, and cost structures, as well as the influence of religion or other factors. To resolve this issue, it is necessary to adjust an operational system in Japan in line with local requirements. This means that it needs to create an efficient system that is appropriate to the local business environment and motivate local employees at the same time.HIDA’s experts dispatch program works well in this scenario. This program enables experts dispatched from Japan to directly observe local issues and challenges, offering specific, focused advice. It also leads to more appropriate arrangements as experts can get a firsthand feel for the local climate, culture, and customs, which sometimes create a different business environment from that of Japan. Above all, experts can communicate with local employees to keep them motivated.HIDA will continue to assist Japanese companies with their localization efforts so that they can further enhance their competitiveness.HIDAJapanOnsiteImprove quality, cost and delivery(QCD), etc.Encourage localizationJapanese company (company dispatching expert)Expert from Japanese companyInvestee company, supplierCompany in developing country (host company of expert)Technical guidance through on-the-job training (OJT) at local companyStrengthen management systemprocess for obtaining a training visa. The latter is something that cannot easily be accomplished by a private company.Fortunately, all of our six trainees have made significant strides as members of the G-TEKT Group due to the training provided. I believe they will carry out their responsibilities and act as leaders in the factory in Indonesia. It was more than 20 years ago that I came to know the training program by AOTS. The company I worked for at that time, TAKAO KINZOKU KOGYO Co., Ltd., established a locally-incorporated subsidiary in Thailand and I heard about AOTS from a Japanese trading firm located in Thailand when we were thinking of giving training to the Thai employees in Japan. We were reminded of AOTS this time around, and participated in an explanatory meeting to learn more about the training program by AOTS.At the meeting, we learned that AOTS was implementing an emergency assistance program in response to flooding in Thailand. Our locally-incorporated subsidiary in Thailand was also affected by the disaster and we were working out what we could do about it. So we promptly participated in this program to dispatch our 25 engineers to Thailand. I realized that AOTS really supported us well when we needed their assistance most.We plan to expand our operations into Mexico in 2014. We will surely seek the assistance of HIDA once again on that occasion.Front pillar upperDashboard upperDashboard lowerFront pillar lowerSide sillCenter pillarParcel shelfRear panelFront wheel houseBulkhead frontDamper housingSide member BMid-floor side memberFront sheetCVT partsAutomobile body frame componentsFigure 3 Overview of Experts Dispatch Programs
