13HIDA Journal No. 2 ● SPRING 2013Dr. Hiroyuki ObaProfessor, Faculty of Economics, Reitaku UniversityTalal Mustafa Khogali MustafaGeneral Manager, SAVOLA EDIBLE OIL (SUDAN) CO., LTD.them based on insights they had learned through lectures and on-site visits. What they noticed through their training in Japan included organized workplace environment, continual improvements, high productivity and efficiency, customer-oriented approach, and quality-focused efforts that are implemented by Japanese companies.Since the AFCM program was started in 2008, Dr. Hiroyuki Oba, Professor, Faculty of Economics, Reitaku University has been giving a lecture entitled “Japan’s corporate philosophy and strategy” as an introduction and guide for participants in creating action plans for the final presentation of the course. Dr. Oba leverages a methodology called “the Co-Creative Human Development (CCHD) Model” (also known as “the matrix”), which is his original development, to help participants create their action plans. Specifically, all participants illustrate their ideas through the model, discussing with each other whether they would be able to leverage and execute what they had learned through AFCM in their home country and why. As they acknowledge the opinions of others and discuss with each other in a focused manner, they will be able to share an awareness as to what is effective and executable among them. In the end, they can clarify what is effective and executable, have a shared awareness for this, more clearly detect their action plans, and be more motivated to execute them. Our past participants include a person who has implemented kaizen activities in his own company based on the action plan he gave at the final presentation and worked on quality improvement. He received an international award for his efforts and accomplishments. His name is Mr. Hassan Mahmoud Hamid Elrayah, who runs an architectural company in Sudan. He participated in AFCM in fiscal 2010. In November 2012, he won the International Quality Crown Award (Gold Category) from an organization called Business Initiative Directions (headquartered in Spain).Dr. Oba encourages participants with the following message: “Completing this course is not the end. It gives you a new start. Please start by making small improvements in your own company when you return home. If you work for a government-affiliated company, please improve the operations of your company and at the same time implement improvements in the other companies you assist. Then, please continue to make improvements as a driver of “kaizen,” and you will become a source of transformation and enable substantial changes around you, as you continue your efforts.”HIDA will make every effort to achieve our mission to realize a world of “Co-Existence and Growing Together” by continually promoting effective and sustainable human resource development assistance for Africa in line with the situations of the continent.Dr. Oba obtained a PhD in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University in India after graduating from Waseda University. After returning to Japan, he worked for GENDAI Advanced Studies Research Organization (Toyota affiliated think-tank) and Gyosei International College in Britain and currently teaches at the Faculty of Economics of Reitaku University. In December 2011, he worked as a lecturer at the young leadership training for the South Asia Federation of AOTS Alumni Societies (SAFAAS)*1, which was held by AOTS (currently HIDA) in Kathmandu, Nepal. He received an award from the Vice President of Nepal for his contributions. In October 2012, he also lectured on Japanese-style corporate management in HIDA’s Lecturing Tours*2 held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Other than those above, he has frequently given lectures throughout the world.*1 The South Asia Federation of AOTS Alumni Societies (SAFAAS): A region-wide organization consisting of 17 AOTS alumni societies located in 6 South Asian countries (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Iran).*2 Lecturing Tours: Seminars held with lecturers dispatched to multiple AOTS alumni societies from Japan. HIDA dispatches lecturers and AOTS alumni societies solicits participants, arranges venues, and implements seminars. Lecturing Tours mainly target countries and regions where overseas training programs are not offered.I work for a manufacturer of cooking oil as General Manager in the sales and management department. The most significant lesson in this training was that I was able to learn practical aspects by studying the success stories of Japanese corporations. I have realized that I definitely need to continually work on kaizen activities for “monozukuri (manufacturing).”Upon returning home, I plan to start kaizen activities in my department and expand them throughout my company in the end. Naturally, I will have a hard time and encounter resistance from other employees, but I am confident that I will be able to obtain their understanding by explaining why kaizen activities are required and showing specific examples. I will further grow the business of my company in the near future so that we can assist in the development of Sudan as a nation.A fiscal 2010 Sudanese participant winning an international award (London, November 2012)Lecturer Voice
