HIDA Journal 2016 AUTUMN No.9

5No. 9 AUTUMN 2016What are important in terms of prior preparations are to hire excellent human resources who can play a central role at PNPM in the future, and to have such human resources understand the purpose of the training in Japan and the training plan, and to make them have a clear motivation for the training. In addition to preparations we had already made for accepting trainees in Japan, such as English training to our employees and translation of training materials into English, etc., we received advice on those for trainees’ living environments including methods to pay food, accommodation, and other living ex-penses and response in case of illness and injury, etc. As for the treat-ment of trainees after they arrived in Japan, we received very helpful advice on how to proceed with the training: systematic instruction and recording according to the training plan, constant feedback from instructors to trainees, and methods to test trainees’ comprehension (make them submit a report or perform tasks, etc.), etc.Prior to the training at Akita Production Facility, the trainees took part in General Orientation Course at HIDA’s Tokyo Kenshu Center (TKC) for six weeks. We felt secure in knowing that there were many Asian trainees in TKC who came to Japan having the same purpose. When I went to TKC on the nal day of General Orientation Course to pick the trainees up to travel to Akita Production Facility, I was very surprised that their Japanese language skills improved more than I thought. In their everyday lives, they could deal with basic matters themselves. I think personnel in Akita Production Facility had a friendly feeling for the trainees. The trainees returned to the Philippines after going through Specialized Technical Training at Akita Production Facility for a month. Did they achieve expected results during the training?Since the six trainees will become leaders for each process, they are required to acquire skills in product processing, quality control, and facility maintenance so as to be able to provide instruction to and supervision over local employees after returning home. Based on the standard operation procedures and other materials, experienced instructors in Akita Production Facility provided thorough guidance, including specic know-how for using special techniques according to the process, to the trainees on a one-to-one basis.Although the trainees did not have experience in the manufacturing of carbon steel tubes, they carefully learned about the company’s quality management system and pro-duction management, product standards, non-destructive inspection, and facility maintenance as high quality and high accuracy are required in the processing tech-nology for motor vehicle engines. We used the form for weekly report between trainee and in-structor provided by HIDA in advance. The trainees wrote technical matters and what they learned in everyday training on the form care-fully in Hiragana. The instructors wrote brief comments on everyday instruction so that the progress of the training can be managed at regular meetings and the trainees can steadily obtain knowledge and skills they learned during the training. Thanks to HIDA’s General Orientation Course, the trainees’ Japanese language skills improved more than I thought, which was very helpful for us in having communications. In addition to the standard operation procedures internally translated into English, we created a visualized manual using videos recorded during the Specialized Technical Training in order to make the standard opera-tion procedures easier to understand. The trainees will support the facility director assigned from Japan as the executive of the facility. Therefore, the trust relationship between the trainees and the Japanese director will be important in addition to the trainees’ technical skills. We would like to provide careful and empathic instruction to the trainees to the extent possible and would like them to feel our expectations. In terms of living environments of the trainees, we reserved rooms at a hotel near JR Yokote Station, and our employees drove them to the facility in the morning and to the hotel in the evening. They did not have particular problems with food in Japan and their health. We think we could smoothly conduct the training. Finally, you will be into the phase to launch the facility in the Philippines.Returned trainees attended the installation of equipment at the fa-cility in the Philippines and are working towards the launch of trial production. The facility director assigned from Japan said that the trainees had condence by taking the training at Akita Production Facility and had high motivations. For the time being, we will place the highest priority on putting the commercial production scheduled in November on track. However, as we need to continuously develop human resources, we would like to consider HIDA’s other programs such as the expert dispatch program, etc.We really understand that you were making thorough preparations for your rst overseas expansion through collaboration among the head ofce, Akita Production Facility, and PNPM.We hope that the trainees will play an active role as leaders and the facility will grow as one of your important production facilities.Thank you very much for taking the time today.Training on the manufacturing process of carbon steel tubesA scene from the meetingTrainees and instructors
