10 HIDA JOURNALMold-Tech Co., Ltd.Technical Instruction at Global Bases by Thai Ex-trainees Next we will introduce Mold-Tech Co., Ltd. (commonly known as Mold-Tech Japan Co., Ltd. to their customers) as a case example of using both the training in Japan and experts dispatch programs to achieve signicant results with HR development. Mold-Tech Co., Ltd. performs surface texturing for the mold tools for plastic products used in vehicles, home appliances, and so forth. It has six factories in Japan in places like Yokohama, Saitama, and Nagoya, and affiliate companies in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. This global-level network was built up through a business partnership agreement with Mold-Tech, which is the etching business division of the company Standex from the United States. It has business partners in countries all over the world, and has set in place a structure that can handle surface processing and repair services in various foreign countries.Head ofce2-8-15, Fukura, Kanazawa-ku, Yokohama, KanagawaEstablished1974Capital70 million yen Employees118 (as of April 2015)Description of business Mold surface texturing (surface texturing for molds for the plastic parts like those in vehicles and electronic products, etc.)How did using the training in Japan and experts dispatch programs work out for you? We have been using the experts dispatch program since FY2009, through which we have dispatched employees to an afliate company located in Samut Prakan, Thailand (Sankei Engraving Technology (Thailand), Ltd.) to provide guidance to our Thai engineers. The contents of the guidance included developing the surface patterns for the surface texturing on the molds for injection molding and quality control for the surface texturing. We learned about the training in Japan program while we were using the experts dispatch program, and began using that in 2012. Our retention rate for Thai technicians trained in Japan is exceptionally high, and none of them have resigned. Perhaps one of the reasons for this is because surface texturing is a specialized skill, and they don’t have other places to transfer jobs in the small size of the industry. But I can’t help but think that our excellent retention rate is also backed by the fact that the laid-back disposition of the Japanese managers suits the character of the Thai people, and we have created a comfortable place to work. As a result of using the HIDA programs to develop human resources at our Thai subsidiary in an ongoing manner, their technical prowess improved remarkably, and I got a real feel for their effectiveness. In reality, it has gotten so that we often receive words of praise from customers of Japanese auto manufacturers to the effect that their technical prowess and quality is high compared with other companies in the same industry. Currently, we have grown to the point where we are having Thai engineers provide technical instruction and handle customers at Mold-Tech sites in countries around the world, instead of Japanese people. Our subsidiary in Samut Prakan was established through joint investment with another company, and had been operating by renting space in a factory lot through our partner. But in 2014 we established a wholly-owned subsidiary (Set Thailand, Co., Ltd.) in Chonburi, and have been steadily expanding our business. The high praise we have received from our customers has come about as a result of using the HIDA programs, for which I would like to highly appraise them in turn.Could you please tell us about the global success of your Thai engineers in a little more detail? We have business partners in countries all over the world, so usually our overseas bases will handle products produced by customers overseas. But for cases where our business partners can’t handle difcult technologies or technologies related to new products or the like, we now dispatch Thai engineers to them instead of Japanese engineers. For our head ofce in Japan, dispatching Thai engineers keeps personnel costs down, and for our business partners it keeps the cost of paying for the technical instruction lower when Thai engineers are sent, which makes everyone happy. We currently have dispatched Thai engineers to the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Argentina, and South Africa to provide technical instruction or handle technologies. Specically, we have two people in the Philippines on a three-month shift, one person on a six-month shift in Vietnam, and one person who has been transferred to and is now working in Indonesia. The Thai engineer who has been transferred is an ex-trainee of HIDA. In addition to undergoing lengthy training in Japan, this person has also been to Japan on business trips a number of times, so he has a good understanding of the technologies at our head office in Japan. When he married an Indonesian person he transferred to our subsidiary in Indonesia, where he has been playing an active role from an instructional standpoint by harnessing the technical prowess rened through his training to improve the technical prowess at the company to which he was transferred. We have also dispatched one person each to Argentina and South Africa.
