HIDA JOURNAL16Introduction to New Global Cooperation ProjectsOverview of and Introduction to HIDA Seminar on Family Business Management for ThailandIn order to meet the diverse needs for the development of human resources for industry both in Japan and overseas, HIDA is instituting New Global Cooperation (NGC) as a voluntary program that does not rely on public money by harnessing the domestic and overseas networks and experience it has cultivated over many years. As part of this voluntary program, we held the “HIDA Seminar on Family Business Management for Thailand (X523)” at the HIDA Kansai Kenshu Center over a five-day schedule beginning July 28, 2014.In Thailand there are numerous companies with a family business configuration (hereafter referred to as FBs) of varying different sizes from major conglomerates down to small and medium-sized businesses, including those by ethnic Chinese people residing there. Among them there are many companies, particularly SMEs, that face challenges in terms of successor issues and long-term stable management, just like with those in Japan. What is more, these FBs have recently received close-up scrutiny, as evidenced by the fact that the financial institutions and other companies that deal with such companies as their clients have held seminars on business succession. As part of this, HIDA planned this seminar owing to a request from the Thai alumni society to learn from examples of FBs in Japan,* which has an enormous number of long-lived companies despite such companies being rare throughout the world, and to have this assist them in managing their own companies in the future. As for the participants, 24 people comprised of company managers running FBs or their successors took part. More than half of the participants were from SMEs with a company size of up to about 300 people, but people from major companies affiliated with conglomerates also participated. The main topics of the seminar include the four items listed below.(1)Business successions at Japan’s long-standing companies (whether or not there were problems at the time of the succession and how they were overcome)(2)Switching business categories (cases of companies changing their business domain when there was a succession)(3)Human resource development at FB companies(4)Managerial strategies and marketing for SMEsThe objective was to have the participants discover clues for solving the problems that the companies they are affiliated with are currently facing (or which they are likely to face in the near future) by introducing these. It is extremely rare for family management of FBs in Thailand to continue for three generations, and business succession is a major problem. Therefore, through lectures and visits to companies the participants learned about the following precedents and carried out planning and implementation so that the lessons could be applied to their own companies.1) Business succession problems faced in the past and case examples in which they were overcome• How to determine and cultivate successors• How to get entrepreneurs involved when handing down a company2) Techniques for harnessing the strengths of FBs in order to make the company last for a long timeWe invited Dr. Hidekazu Sone, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration, Tezukayama University and Director of the Japan Academy of Family Business, and Ms. Chie Yamano, Chief Producer for the Osaka Urban Industry Promotion Center and Editor in Participants receiving an explanation from Mr. Harada at Chidoriya Souke co., ltd.Schedule for the HIDA Seminar on Family Business Management for Thailand DateMorning (9:30-12:30)Afternoon (13:30-16:30)Jul. 28(Mon.)Orientation / Opening CeremonyIntroduction of FB in JapanCurrent topics of FB Challenges FB companies face Corporate philosophy of SME’s, etc. Dr. Hidekazu Sone, Assistant Professor, Tezukayama UniversityHow to improve FB ~ Learning from Japanese FB companies ~Businesses SuccessionTransformation Regional Vitalization by FB, etc. Ms. Chie Yamano, Chief Producer/Executive EditorOsaka Urban Industry Promotion CenterJul. 29(Tues.)Corporate Strategy for SMEs (FBs)Dr. Hidekazu Sone, Assistant Professor, Tezukayama UniversityMarketing for SMEs (FBs)Dr.Hidekazu Sone, Assistant Professor, Tezukayama UniversityJul. 30(Wed.)Company VisitChidoriya Souke co., ltd.
