HIDA JOURNAL12HIDA’s Involvement in Human Resource Development in ThailandInterview with Associate Professor Dr. Krisada Visavateeranon, President of the Thai-Nichi Institute of TechnologyThis spring Associate Professor Dr. Krisada Visavateeranon, President of the Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology (TNI)* was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon by the Japanese Government in recognition for his contributions to promoting academic exchanges and mutual understanding between Japan and Thailand. President Krisada received training in Japan as a trainee of HIDA (AOTS at the time, hereafter referred to as HIDA) in 1978. We spoke with President Krisada about his connections with Japan and HIDA, his thoughts on getting involved in human resource development in Thailand after returning home there, and the characteristics of TNI.* This is a “Japanese-style manufacturing college” in Thailand whose objective is to provide practical education. It opened in June 2007. Refer to the interview article for details. Please tell us about your connections to Japan and the Technology Promotion Association (Thailand-Japan: TPA),* which is the parent organization for TNI.I enrolled in a program for international students at Chiba University in 1968, following which I studied at Kyoto University from 1969 to 1975 where I completed a master’s course program in electrical engineering. While studying abroad I received training in subjects like manufacturing industrial measuring devices over a six-month period at Yokogawa Electric Corporation through a referral from my academic supervisor. After returning to Thailand I obtained a post as a teacher at Chulalongkorn University where I taught electrical engineering, and starting from around 1976 I came to be involved in TPA activities concurrently with my duties at the university. For TPA I served as a lecturer for seminars in technical fields while also writing and translating books on the telecommunications sector and other fields on the side. In addition, I managed training delegations to Japan and launched an industrial measurement business and an information center. Moreover, I consecutively served as a director, managing director, and vice President of TPA, and I currently hold dual posts as Executive Director of TPA and President of TNI.*This is an organization that was established through the cooperation of volunteers from Thailand who have returned home from training or studying abroad in Japan, and with the support of related organizations in Japan. It carries out activities to elevate and disseminate scientific and technical knowledge, develop industrial human resources, and make other efforts with the goal of developing Thailand’s economy. It seems that Since being involved with TPA you have also been involved with HIDA as well in a variety of different contexts? The industrial measurement field that I studied while studying abroad in Japan is an important business for TPA, and I wanted to learn about this field in greater depth once more in Japan. As such, I once again traveled to Japan as a trainee through the AOTS Scholarship from 1978 to 1979. For the first three weeks I participated in general training that was held at the Yokohama Kenshu Center. Since I was already able to speak Japanese, during the general training I also took classes other than Japanese, following which I received practical training once again at Yokogawa Electric Corporation.Aside from my own personal connection with HIDA, many of the management personnel and staff from TPA have also taken part in HIDA training. What is more, staff members were also dispatched from HIDA to teach Japanese in TPA’s early days. There is also a former director of HIDA who has given me advice on various matters as an advisor to me as the president of TNI, and who has also served as an intermediary with President Krisada sitting for the interview
