2 HIDA JOURNALand managerial capability. Meidoh won the Deming Application Prize* previously in 2010 and the 2013 Deming Grand Prize this time. In order to realize the goal of becoming the industry leader by 2020, all employees work as one to improve quality, cost and delivery time (QCD), and support the company for achieving better management.* The Deming Prize Committee changed the name of the Deming Application Prize to the Deming Prize in 2012.[Date of interview: December 3, 2013; Interviewer: Tomoe Watanabe, Assistant Manager, Scholarship Administration Group, Scholarship Administration Department]Meidoh Co., Ltd.Meidoh Co., Ltd., a user of HIDA programs, won the 2013 Deming Grand Prize. Since the company’s foundation, Meidoh Co., Ltd. has been a subcontract plant of Toyota Motor Corporation, and it manufactures and sells high-tension bolts and nuts and cold forging parts for automobiles. Ever since the third and current president took the post in 1999, he has set “No.1 Strategy” as the objective and promoted continuous improvement of people and goods. The sales back then was about 10 billion yen, ranking 7th or 8th in the industry. But now the company’s sales has grown to almost 30 billion yen, ranking the third in the industry. Except for 2008, the year of Lehman’s collapse, the company’s sales have been growing steadily. The number of employees has also doubled from 500 to 1,000 strong. While expanding its organization and business, Meidoh said it challenged Deming Prize as a way to reinforce its human resource development Congratulations for winning the Deming Grand Prize right before your 90th anniversary milestone in April 2014.Our company was founded in 1924, so we will celebrate the 90th anniversary in April 2014. To celebrate our 90th anniversary and winning of the Deming Grand Prize, we had a big party in November 2013. Seventeen hundred of employees and their family members enjoyed the party held at Nagashima Onsen hot spring. In fact, our group company MC Systems Inc. also won the 2013 Deming Prize. We work with our affiliated companies for quality improvement. Together, we will continue to strive to enhance our customers’ level of confidence in quality. You set “No.1 Strategy” objective in 1999, and since then you have steadily built up a track record toward the goal. What are the factors that support your steady growth? We think that the biggest factor is the change in our employees’ way of thinking. Our employees’ minds are unified in order to cope with a major change in external environment. One time, we received a big order from Toyota Motor for their overseas production expansion. The order was to manufacture important parts, such as hub bolts to fasten tires and engine bolts, which used to be made in Toyota Motor Miyoshi Plant, for Toyota’s overseas plants. Delivering inferior quality parts to Toyota would be a damaging blow to a small company like us. Taking this opportunity, there emerged a growing consciousness among all employees to enhance quality and efficiency, reduce costs and improve delivery performance thoroughly. It was around the time when we also started to strengthen our TQM activities, get coaching from external experts, and receive TPM diagnosis. The second factor is to value the information which the sales department brings in. We hold a meeting to report the activities of the sales department every week, and the chairperson and the president always attend the meeting. We have been continuing Meidoh Co., Ltd.Head Office:4-5 Sangencho, Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture (Head Office/Toyota Plant)Founded:April 1924Established:July 1950Capital:JPY 50 millionNo. of Employees:1,029 (as of April, 2013)Description of business:Manufacture and sales of high- strength bolts and cold forging partsAs part of Japanese technical cooperation, HIDA operates its programs under public-private partnership for the purpose of fostering industrial human resources to support economic development of developing countries. There are three types of HIDA programs: Training in Japan, Training in Overseas Countries and Experts Dispatch Program. In this issue, we will focus on the Training Programs in Japan for engineers and managers. We will introduce a company which uses Training in Japan for developing Indonesia-based human resources, and a case in which an ex-participant of HIDA’s Technical and Management Training is expanding business after returning home by earning the trust of Japanese companies as business partners using the knowledge and experience he learned in Japan.—Developing human resources that support Meidoh’s manufacturing—Winning the 2013 Deming Grand PrizeExamples of HIDA’s Training Programs for Human Resource Development
