22 HIDA JOURNALHIDA co-hosted a symposium entitled “Cooperation between Indonesia and Japan towards the development of Indonesian industrial human resources” with the Indonesia Japan Friendship Association (PPIJ) in Jakarta, Indonesia, on November 22, 2013, to commemorate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Japan. This symposium was attended by about 120 people, mainly from the industrial and educational fields of the two countries, and became a forum for heated exchanges of opinions, involving the audience as well. The following gives the background to the symposium and describes what was happening there.Indonesia, which has the largest population among the ASEAN nations, has been maintaining a stable growth rate of 4‒6% in recent years, and a lot of Japanese companies, particularly those in the automobile and motorcycle industries, have been activity expanding their business into the country. While there is a rapid increase in demand for industrial human resources equipped with the advanced technological expertise, knowledge, skills and managerial abilities required by the Indonesian industrial world, such industrial human resources, developed through educational institutions, vocational training organizations, etc., are in increasingly short supply, in terms of both quantity and quality. In consideration of this situation, this symposium aimed not only to clarify what industrial human resources should be developed to reinforce the industrial competitiveness of Indonesia but also to examine the direction in which sustainable industrial human resource development measures and systems developed jointly by the industrial, academic and governmental sectors and the roles of, and cooperation between, organizations implementing them should go in the future through discussions between opinion leaders from companies, educational institutions, industrial bodies, etc. of the two countries. The symposium was opened with host’s addresses by Mr. Kazuo Kaneko, President of HIDA, and Prof. Dr. Ir. Ginandjar Kartasasmita, Chairperson of PPIJ, followed by guest’s addresses by H.E. Yoshinori Katori, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Indonesia, and Mr. Robby Kambey, Secretary General, HIDA-AOTS Jakarta Alumni Society.Keynote lecturesProf. Dr. Alex SW Retraubun, Deputy Minister of Industry, and Mr. Masahiro Nonami, Vice President of Jakarta Japan Club (JJC)/President of PT. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), delivered keynote lectures, entitled “Importance of Human Resource Development in Industrial Development” and “Human Resources Sought After by Japanese Companies and Case Examples of Human Resource Development,” respectively.Outline of the lecture by Prof. Dr. Alex SW Retraubun, Deputy Minister of Industry“Japan has been contributing substantially to the growth of Indonesia over a long time. We appreciate Japan’s support, thinking that it has planted industrial seeds for Indonesia to grow into an industrial power in the future. We are sure that Indonesian industries will continue to be enhanced. The Indonesian government is also planning to improve its industry-related legal framework. As for human resource development, we believe that we can overcome our industrial human resource problems with the support of HIDA.”Outline of the lecture by Mr. Masahiro Nonami, Vice President of JJC/President of TMMIN“Given that Indonesia is the fifth largest market in the world and has potential for further growth in the future, it is an extremely important market. However, Indonesian companies still fail to effectively develop human resources. Particularly, field leaders have not been developed in suffi cient numbers. To allow Indonesia to achieve further industrial growth, it is essential to develop such human resources as early as possible. We are hoping that high school students and other young people in Indonesia will be given more opportunities in the future to participate in seminars to learn about knowledge and ways of Mr. Kazuo Kaneko, President of HIDAProf. Dr. Ir.
