HIDA JOURNAL 2014 SPRING No.4
23/28

No.4 SPRING 2014 21in Bangladesh were given the opportunity to take part in this year’s program as assistants as follow-up to their training. It can be said that this effective continuity makes these programs as a good example of WNF Programs. Another characteristic of these programs is that many women have participated in them, while participants of technological programs are usually predominantly male. The smiles on the faces of participants in the photos suggest how fulfi lling the training was.[Kaori Saito, Global Strategy Group, HIDA Research Institute][Kaori Saito, Global Strategy Group, HIDA Research Institute]The 3rd Young Leadership Workshop in BangladeshThe 3rd Young Leadership Workshop was held on September 27 and 28, 2013, concurrently with the SAFAAS Conference, in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The workshop was participated in by a total of 29 participants, including young members of Alumni Societies of Chattagram and Dhaka in Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Deli, Mumbai and Chennai in India. Besides them, three Japanese interns Workshop participants and instructorssent to Bangladesh on METI Global Internship Program and senior members, including the chairpersons of respective Alumni Societies, took part in it as observers. This workshop was organized for the first time in 2011 in Kathmandu, concurrently with the 9th SAFAAS Conference, and has been held repeatedly since then, in line with the recognition that “while each Alumni Society in the SAFAAS region has been actively working, there has not been suffi cient coordination between young members to pass down the activities of their Alumni Societies.” Ex-participants of this workshop, who have registered as members of the Young Kyoso Group, confirmed that “Alumni Societies should grow continuously hand in hand with AOTS (HIDA)” (in the 1st workshop in Kathmandu) and learned a breakthrough thinking-based problem solving approach (in the 2nd workshop in Colombo). The 3rd Young Leadership Workshop, which was organized as one of the WNF Programs, covered themes such as “(1) achieving goals while reinforcing a sense of unity, (2) aiming to increase productivity from a broad point of view and (3) keeping away from small-minded perspectives to turn problems into chances” and invited Mr. Dhammika Kalapuge (who participated in the Program on Corporate Management for Sri Lanka in FY2011), recommended by the Japan Sri Lanka Technical & Cultural Association (JASTECA), as the lecturer. The fi rst day was allocated mainly to the instructor’s lectures based on his rich consulting experiences in diff erent countries, while the workshop on the second day was conducted in the form of group discussions, getting participants to discuss themes such as assessments of abilities of individuals, qualities shared in common by successful leaders and improvement of productivity through optimization of resources. The workshop also gave participants the opportunity to hear Mr. Muhammad Nurul Islam (the founder of the Chattagram AOTS Alumni Society) and Dr. A.K.M. Moazzem Hussain (Advisor, AOTS Alumni Society of Dhaka) talk about their experiences from the early days of the Alumni Societies, how to effectively communicate with senior members based on a good understanding of diff erent cultures of diff erent countries, and so on, as well as to exchange experiences with each other. Now that the original aim of the workshop, “exchanges between members,” has been steadily achieved, we are hoping that the workshop will proceed to the next stage. In other words, the next aim is to enable young Alumni members to act on their own initiatives.[Masami Tada, Global Strategy Group, HIDA Research Institute]Sample-based lectureEnthusiastic participantsInstructor and participants in Kathmandu, Nepal
