14 HIDA JOURNALEstablishment of the HIDA Research Institute̶Connecting people with people and companies with companies across national borders for the co-prosperity of Japan and other countries̶Incorporated as a foundation in April this yearBorn out of the merger of AOTS and JODC in March last year, HIDA was reorganized as a general incorporated foundation in April this year. April this year also saw another new development̶i.e., the establishment of the HIDA Research Institute (HRI), which was created to promote independent projects. With the rapid economic growth of developing countries in Asia and other areas in recent years, Japanese companies are faced with a growing need to develop their businesses overseas for their expansion and growth. In the past, HIDA has focused on supporting the industrial growth in developing countries and the overseas development of Japanese companies through human resource development projects, with AOTS specializing in personnel training programs and JODC in experts dispatch programs. In the future, we aim to develop a network business by using the value-added information required for Japanese companies in various phases of their overseas development.Over its history of more than 50 years, HIDA has developed a worldwide human network. Its network is represented by HIDA-AOTS alumni societies that are voluntarily established by former trainees that have returned to their home countries after receiving training in Japan. Such alumni societies exist in 71 areas in 43 countries (as of the end of September 2013). In order to serve as bridges between Japan and their respective countries, alumni societies are engaged in a variety of activities, including organizing Japanese language courses and Japanese business management seminars. Working in cooperation with alumni societies organized by pro-Japanese ex-participants well versed in Japanese culture, the HRI will develop the Global Interface Japan project in an effort to connect people with people and companies with companies between Japan and other countries. As major pillars of our operations, we provide three different services: information dissemination service, overseas survey service, and business exchange service. We attract public attention through information dissemination, gather information on different countries through overseas surveys, and create business opportunities through business exchanges, thereby promoting economic and technical exchanges between global companies.Three services(1) Information dissemination serviceWe distribute cross-border business information mainly to Japanese companies’ stakeholders and former trainees who are working in their home countries through HRI’s home pages and newsletters. To this end, we created a website entitled “Global Interface Japan: Emerging Country Business Information” on August 1 this year to provide useful information for overseas business development in Japanese. Our information includes data on industry and company trends in emerging countries, interviews with managers of companies branching out overseas, as well as news articles and reports. In parallel with our information service on this website, we deliver newsletters via e-mail to those who request information. Please visit our website.http://hri.hidajapan.or.jpThe above website is also available in English. The English language version of the website provides information on the overseas business development of Japanese companies and latest product technologies for former AOTS trainees, business managers, executives and engineers in emerging countries. At present, HRI’s newsletters are distributed to 28,000 readers in 134 countries around the world, including Asian countries, and we plan to further increase the number of readers. Companies searching for import/export partners or joint venture partners in emerging countries would be well advised to advertise their businesses to 28,000 training program alumni and their companies.(2) Overseas survey serviceMaking the most of the strengths of HIDA, which can gather up-to-date local information through the network of alumni that covers a wide range of local industries, we gather information on local markets and companies in the countries and industries specified by business owners in Japan. We provide services to meet the need for up-to-date overseas information unavailable via the Internet. Such information is necessary for companies to review the possibility of overseas business development.(3) Business exchange serviceWe often receive requests to visit some local companies and meet with business owners in developing countries to find local purchasers and manufacturing contractors. However, we are also told that it is very diffi cult for companies to make the necessary arrangements and coordinate schedules on their own. The HRI provides business exchange services to eliminate such diffi culties.Companies seeking to branch out overseas that require necessary information are welcome to use the HRI’s services in order to achieve successful results in their overseas development.Activities through HIDA’s Worldwide NetworkTop page of the HIDA Research Institute’s website
