We report three such companies through this edition.The first company we report on is DENSO MANUFACTURING VIETNAM CO., LTD. (DMVN). DMVN is an affiliate of Denso Corporation and is located at Thang Long Industrial Park in Hanoi City, Vietnam. The company has been quite enthusiastic about developing human resources since its foundation so that they can produce high-quality and low-cost products, sending several future executives for training in Japan every year through the AOTS (currently HIDA) program.This time, we asked Deputy Director Hirokuni Ichiraku, Production Engineering Division about the company’s policy in human resource development and talked with Mr. Nguyen Trung Huan, who participated in the training last year, about his experiences in Japan. [Date of interview: December 18, 2012]First of all, could you give us the overview of your business?We are a manufacturer of automobile parts, established in October 2001 with a capital contribution ratio of 95% by Denso Corporation (headquartered in Kariya City, Aichi Prefecture). Our company is different from other ordinary locally-incorporated subsidiaries overseas in that we are registered as an export processing enterprise (EPE), targeting the procure-ment of our products across the world since the foundation of our business. We have approximately 2,200 employees including dispatched workers, with 18 loaned Japanese employees.So you are not only selling products to the domestic market in Vietnam but exporting them to other coun-tries.We advocate “monozukuri (manufactur-ing) with competitiveness in the global market” as our credo and focus on deliv-ering high-quality and low-cost products across the world. Thus, we are dealing with the whole world including the do-mestic Vietnamese market and Japan. Our competitors even include other overseas sites of the Denso Group. I believe that our ultimate mission is to contribute to the development of Vietnam as a result.What approach do you take to achieve a competitive edge in the global market?Denso has the basic value of monozukuri that has been passed on throughout its history since foundation, which we call “Denso spirit.” Our basic approach in work is to translate this value into our ac-tions in a diligent, consistent manner. All employees are required to act on this value both in Japan and overseas.Developing something new or innovative is not the only way to succeed in the global market. We also believe it is critical for us to be dedicated to whatever minute things we do and continually improve what we do through our small day-to-day efforts. However, it is also quite difficult to live up to this seemingly self-evident value. In that sense, we consider human re-source development as the primary factor enabling us to compete on a global scale going forward. The Denso Group seems to be keen on human resource development. Does this also apply to your com-pany?That’s right. At the end of the day, Japanese employees working here including me have come to Vietnam to develop human resources in this company. Our mission is to develop as many Vietnamese employees as possible who share the “Denso spirit.”To that end, we consider it critical to provide Japanese language education for our employees. As our employees improve their Japanese language skills, they can directly communicate with Japanese employees located at our Japanese head-quarters and implement various projects.
